Բեղուն է եղել Սվեդենբորգի գյուտարարական-գիտական գործունեությունը։ 1741 թվականին՝ 53 տարեկան հասակում նա մուտք է գործել ոգեղեն փուլ, սկսել է փորձեր կատարել երազների, տեսիլքների ուսումնասիրման նպատակով[10][11]: Նրա փորձարկումները ծայրագույն կետի են հասել «հոգևոր վերազարթոնքի» մեջ, երբ, իր իսկ խոստովանությամբ, Հիսուս Քրիստոսը հայտնվել է նրան և հանձնարարել, որ գրի «Երկնային ուսմունք» աշխատությունը՝ քրիստոնեությունը բարեփոխելու նպատակով[12]։ Ըստ այդ գրքի՝ Տերը բացել է Սվեդենբորգի հոգու աչքերը, և այդ պահից սկսած՝ նա կարող էր ազատորեն այցելել դրախտ ու դժոխք, զրուցել հրեշտակների, չարքերի ու այլ ոգիների հետ։ Գրքում հեղինակը այն միտքն է նաև հայտնել, որ Ահեղ դատաստանը տեղի է ունեցել իր «De Nova Hierosolyma et Ejus Doctrina Coelesti» («Նոր Երուսաղեմի և նրա երկնային ուսմունքի վերաբերյալ», 1758) աշխատության լույս ընծայումից մեկ տարի առաջ՝ 1757 թվականին[13]։

Կյանքի վերջին 28 տարիների ընթացքում Սվեդենբորգը գրել ու հրատարակել է աստվածաբանական 18 աշխատություն, մի քանիսն էլ մնացել են անտիպ։ Իր «Ճշմարիտ քրիստոնեական կրոն» աշխատության մեջ, որը հենց ինքն էլ տպագրել է, նա ինքն իրեն անվանում է «Տեր Հիսուս Քրիստոսի ծառա»[14][15]։ Երկնային ուսմունքի հետևորդների մի մասը հավատացած է, որ Սվեդենբորգի աստվածաբանական աշխատություններից միայն նրանք են ամբողջությամբ Աստծուց ներշնչված, որոնք հրատարակվել են անձամբ նրա ձեռքով[16]։ Ուրիշները Սվեդենբորգի բոլոր աշխատությունները համարում են հավասարապես ներշնչված[17]։ Սկզբնապես 1787 թվականին հիմնադրված Նոր (Սվեդենբորգյան) եկեղեցու և պատմականորեն նրա հետ կապված քրիստոնեական դավանաբանական ուղղությունների հետևորդները Սվեդենբորգի գրվածքները համարում են հայտնություն[18][19]։

Ոգետես էակի (տեսանող ոգվոց) համբավ ունեցող Սվեդենբորգի գլխավոր երկը աստվածա-իմաստասիրական «Երկնային գաղտնիքներ» («Arcana Coelestia»; 1749—1756) գիրքն է, որը բովանդակում է այլաբանական մեկնություններ «Հնգամատյանի» առաջին երկու գրքերի մասին։ Սվեդենբորգի աստվածա-իմաստասիրությունը (սվեդենբորգիանիզմ, սվեդենբորգականություն) ժխտում է Աստծո՝ իբրև բացարկված սկզբի հասկացությունը։ Ըստ այդ ուսմունքի՝ Աստված հավիտենապես ունի իր որոշյալ և էական ձևը, որն ինքն իսկ՝ մարդկային մարմնի կերպն է։ Իրապես գոյություն ունեցող է հանդիսանում Աստվածամարդը, Հիսուս Քրիստոսն ու նրա արքայությունը. մատերիան՝ որպես ինքնակա գոյություն, բոլորովին գոյություն չունի, և նյութական երևույթների անկախությունը դրանց հոգևոր պատճառներից ու նպատակներից՝ ընդամենը խաբուսիկ երևութք է, որն ունի սուբյեկտիվ ծագում։ Սվեդենբորգը տարբերակում էր գոյի երեք ոլորտ՝ երկինք (մարդ-հրեշտակների աշխարհը), դժոխք (եսասեր մարդկանց աշխարհը) և ոգիների (չարի ու բարու ճամփաբաժան-խաչմերուկում մահացած մարդկանց հոգիների) միջանցիկ աշխարհը։

Սվեդենբորգը հետազոտություններ, ուսումնասիրություններ է կատարել նաև տիեզերաբանության (կոսմոլոգիայի), մեխանիկայի, մաթեմատիկայի, կազմախոսության (անատոմիայի), ֆիզիոլոգիայի, քաղաքականության, տնտեսագիտության, մետաղաձուլության, երկրաբանության, հանքաբանության ու քիմիայի ասպարեզներում։ Հեղինակել է մետաղների մշակման վերաբերյալ աշխատություններ։ Համարվում է հանքաբանության և ուղեղի ֆիզիոլոգիայի հիմնադիրներից մեկը։
