Ֆլորենս Հաուն ծնվել է 1929 թվականին Բրուքլինում[5], Սամուել և Ֆրենսիս Սթիլի Ռոզենֆելդների ընտանիքում։ Ֆլորենսը սովորել սիրել է վաղ տարիքից։ Նրա մայրը հաշվապահ էր և դստերը քաջալերում էր շարունակել կրթությունը[4]։

1946 թվականին ընդունվել է Հանթեր քոլեջի ավագ դպրոց և Բրուքլինից այն հինգ երիտասարդ կանանցից մեկն էր, ովքեր ընդունվել էին այդ քոլեջ։ 1949 թվականին ընդունվել է Phi Beta Kappa ակադեմիական կազմակերպություն։ Շատերը նրան քաջալերում էին ավարտել գրականության բաժինը և դառնալ քոլեջի պրոֆեսոր։ 1950 թվականին անգլերենի բակալավրի աստիճան է ստացել Հանթեր քոլեջից և ընդունվել Սմիթ քոլեջ, որն ավարտել է 1951 թվականին՝ ստանալով անգլերենի մագիստրոսի կոչում[4]։ 1987 թվականին արժանացել է Պաուվ համալսարանի պատվավոր դոկտորի կոչման[6]։
