Ֆլորա Աննի Ստիլ (2 ապրիլի, 1847 թվական– 12 ապրիլի, 1929 թվական), անգլիացի գրող, որը Բրիտանական Հնդկաստանում ապրել է 22 տարի: Հռչակ է ձեռք բերել հատկապես այդ ենթամայրցամաքին վերաբերող գրքերով:

Ֆլորա Աննի Ուեբթերը ծնվել է Լոնդոնի Միդլսեքս թաղամասի Սադբուրի արվարձանում և Ջորջ Ուեբսթերի վեցերորդ զավակն էր[1]: 1867 թվականին ամուսնացել է Հենրի Վիլյամ Ստիլի հետ, որը «Հնդկական քաղաքացիական ծառայություն» կազմակերպության անդամ էր և ապրել է մինչև 1889 թվականը Փունջաբում[2], որի հետ կապված են նրա գրքերից շատերը: Նա խորապես հետաքրքրվեց բնիկ հնդկական կյանքով և սկսեց Հնդկաստանի կառավարությանը պարտադրել կրթական բարեփոխումներ: Տիկին Ստիլը դարձել է կառավարության տեսուչը Փունջաբի օժանդակ դպրոցներում և նաև աշխատել է Ջոն Լոքվուդ Կիպլինգի՝ Ռեդյարդ Քիփլինգի հայրիկի հետ, որպեսզի նպաստի հնդկական արվեստների և արհեստների զարգացմանը[3] : Երբ նրա ամուսնու առողջությունը վատացել է, Ֆլորա Աննի Ստիլը ստանձնել է նրա պարտականությունների մի մասը:

Ստեղծագործություններ խմբագրել

Ֆլորա Աննի Ստիլը հետաքրքրված էր Հնդկաստանի մշակույթով: Նրա դստեր ծնունդը հնարավորություն տվեց շփվելու տեղացի կանանց հետ և սովորելու նրանց լեզուն: Նա խրախուսում էր տեղացիների ձեռագործ աշխատանքների արտադրությունը և հավաքում էր ժողովրդական բանահյուսության նմուշներ, որոնց հավաքածուն նա հրատարակեց 1894թվականին:

Her interest in schools and the education of women gave her insight into native life and character. A year before leaving India, she co-authored and published The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook, which gave detailed directions to European women on all aspects of household management in India.

In 1889 the family moved back to Scotland, and she continued her writing there. Some of her best work, according to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, is contained in two collections of her short stories, From the Five Rivers and Tales of the Punjab.

Steel's novel On the Face of the Waters (1896) describes incidents during the Indian Mutiny. She also wrote a popular history of India. John F. Riddick describes Steel's The Hosts of the Lord as one of the "three significant works" produced by Anglo-Indian writers on Indian missionaries, along with The Old Missionary (1895) by William Wilson Hunter and Idolatry (1909) by Alice Perrin.[9] Among her other literary associates in India was Bithia Mary Croker.[10]
