English: Despite the date (lower right) this drawing was probably executed around 1865 as it reflects Burne-Jones’ new interest in classical sculpture, and in particular the seated deities from the Athenian Parthenon which he copied at the British Museum. This marks the beginning of Burne-Jones’ fascination with the fall of drapery from the female figure. The chalk gives the composition a soft, ethereal feel that is indicative of his move towards Aestheticism. (see references)
