UNA Giovane, mal vestita, di rosso, e giallo, avrà l'ali alle spalle, e a' piedi, sarà cieca, sporgendo ambedue le mani avanti, una più dell'altra, in atto di volersi appigliare ad ogni cosa. La Volontà scrivono alcuni, che sia come Regina, la quale, sedendo nella più nobil parte dell'uomo, dispensi le Leggi sue, secondo gli avvenimenti, o favorevoli, o contrarij che, o riporti il senso, o persuada la ragione; e quando, o da questa, o da quello vien malamente informata, s'inganna nel commandare, e disturba la concordia dell'uomo interiore, la qual si può ancora forse dire ministra dell'intelletto, a cui volentieri si sottomette per fuggire il sospetto di contumace, e de' sentimenti, li quali va secondando, acciò che non diano occasione di tumulto; e però fù dall'Autore di questa, come credo, dipinta con vestito povero, se bene Xenofonte, conforme all'altra opinione, la dipinse molto ricca, come diremo poi. Il color rosso, e giallo, cagionati presso al Sole per l'abondanza della luce, potranno in questo luogo, secondo quella corrispondenza, dimostrar la verità, che è chiarezza, lume, e splendore dell'intelletto. Si dipinge con l'ali, perché si domanda co'l nome di Volontà, e perché, con un perpetuo volo discorrendo, inquieta se stessa per cercar la quiete, la qual, non ritrovando con volo ordinario vicino alla Terra, ingagliardisce il suo moto verso il Cielo, e verso Iddio, e però ancora a' piedi tiene l'ali, che l'aiutano sminuendo la timidità, e l'audacia. La Cecità le conviene perché, non vedendo per se stessa cosa alcuna, va quasi tentone dietro al senso, se è debile, e ignobile, o dietro alla ragione, se è gagliarda, e di prezzo...
