The Persians, ofter their conquest of Armenia, destroyedmany of the churches and schools. Many of the bishops andpriests were captured. Some were martyred on the spot, otherswere carried to Persia and- there executed. The patriarch,Joseph, in whose character and life shine forth piety, courageand devotion, was one of those carried to Persia. The latter,therefore, attempted to subdue them. The Armenians availedthemselves of this ample occasion, armed themselves and urgedVahan Mamigonian to take the lead of the army to clear outof the country the troops of the enemy left there. The Persianforces had received such terrible disastrous defeats in variouscontests from the Armenians, under the command of PrinceVahan Mamigonian, that when a new governor, Nikhor, wasappointed by Balos, the King of Persia (A. D. 485), he insteadof attacking Vahan, who held almost the whole of the country,wished to come to an arrangement agreeable to the Armen-ians. Prince Vahan therefore proposed the following terms: 1.
