340 թ–ին Կոստանդիոս II–ի եղբայրների միջև ծագած քաղաքացիական պատերազմի արդյունքում Կոստանդիանոս II–ը սպանվում է և Կոստանդը դառնում է կայսրության արևմտյան մասի միակ տիրակալը մինչև 350 թ. երբ նա զոհ է գնում Մագնետիոսի ապստամբությանը։ Կոստանդիոս II–ը չի ընդունում Մագնետիոսին որպես գահակից և պատերազմ է նախաձեռնում նրա դեմ։ Մագնետիոսը ջախջախվում է երկու ճակատամարտերում և ինքնասպանություն գործում՝ թողնելով Կոստանդիոս II–ին ամբողջ կայսրության միահեծան տիրակալ[7]։

Կոստանդիոս II–ի հետագա ռազմական գործողությունները գերմանական ցեղերի դեմ ընթացել են ընդհանուր առմամբ հաջող։ Նա ջախջախել է ալեմաններին 354–ին[8], անցել է Դանուբը և ջախջախել քվադերին և սարմատներին 357–ին[9]։ Դրան հակառակ, նրա պատերազմները Սասանյան Պարսկաստանի դեմ ունեցել են փոփոխական արդյունքներ։

Քանի որ կայսրության հսկայական տարածքը միանձնյա կառավարելը դժվար էր՝ 351-ին Կոստանդիոս II–ը իր հորեղբոր որդուն՝ Կոստանդիոս Գալլոսին նշանակում է կրտսեր կառավարիչ՝ շնորհելով նրան «կեսար» տիտղոսը, սակայն երեք տարի անց նրան մահապատժի է ենթարկում՝ ստանալով տեղեկություններ Գալլոսի դաժան գործելաոճի վերաբերյալ[7] Որոշ ժամանակ անց՝ 355-ին Կոստանդիոս II–ը «կեսար» է դարձնում իր հորեղբոր վերջին վերապրած որդուն Հուլիանոսին, որը հետագայում նրան հաջորդում է[10][11]։

360-ին Հուլիանոսի բանակը հռչակում է նրան կայսր, ինչը հանգեցնում է քաղաքացիական պատերազմի նոր բռնկմանը[12][13][14][15]։ Վճռական ճակատամարտը չի կայանում Կոստանդիոս II–ի հիվանդության և մահվան պատճառով։
