Պատմական Պոնտոսը գտնվում էր [[Թուրքիա]]յի կազմում և ընդգրկում [[Սև ծով]]ի ափամերձ տարածքները։ Առաջին համաշխարհային պատերազմի նախօրեին Պոնտոսի հունական բնակչությունը 700.000 մարդ էր։ Փաստորեն Պոնտոսում ապրող հույների 50 տոկոսը բնաջնջվեց թուրք բարբարոսների կողմից։
