Ջրհեղեղը ցամաքի զգալի տարածքների ժամանակավոր ջրածածկումն է որն առաջանում է գետերում, լճերում, ծովերում, ջրի մակարդակի բարձրացման հետևանքով։ Ջրհեղեղի հիմնական պատճառներն են տեղատարափ անձրևները, փլուզումները եւ այլն։ Ջրհեղեղի կանխարգելման, դրանց ազդեցության նվազեցման հիմնական միջոցառումները կրում են ինժեներական և ագրոտեխնիկական բնույթ։
Երբեմն ջրհեղեղների առաջացմանը նպաստող պայմաններ են ստեղծում իրենք՝ բնակիչները կատարելով օրինազանց գործողություններ՝ ծառահատում, սելավների վրա շինություների տեղադրում և այլն։
