Բրիտանական անդրծովյան տարածքներ տերմինը փոխարինել է '''Բրիտանական կախյալ տարածքներ''' տերմինին 2002 թվականին, որին նախոդելնախորդել է 1981 թվականի Բրիտանական ազգային ակտը: 1983 թվականի հունվարի 1-ին տարածները պաշտոնապես անվանվել են '''[[Արքայական գաղութ|Բրիտանական արքայական գաղութներ]]''': [[Բրիտանական անտարկտիդական տարածքներ]]ից և [[Հարավային Ջորջիա և Հարավային Սանդվիչյան կղզիներ]]ից (որտեղ միայն պաշտոնական անձնակազմն է ապրում) ու [[Բրիտանական Հնդկական օվկիանոսի տարածք]]ից (օգտագործվում է ռազմական նկատառումներով) բացի, մնացած տարածքներում ապրում են քաղաքացիական մշտական բնակչություն: Մոտ 7.000 մշտական քաղաքացիներ են ապրում նաև Կիպրոսի [[Ակրոտիրի և Դեկելիա]] ռազմական հենակետում:
