It has been shown that, among Scots speakers, there is little linguistic self-awareness.{{Citation needed|date=March 2010}} After the [[Acts of Union 1707|union of Scotland and England]] (1707), the use of Standard English was encouraged and the use of Scots discouraged. Due to the widespread use of Standard English in the media, many now believe they are merely using badly-spoken English, rather than Scots. Moreover, the fact that children are taught through the medium of Standard English has meant that few have an in-depth knowledge of Scots spelling (see [[apologetic apostrophe]] for example).{{Citation needed|date=March 2010}}
