{{Policylist Deletion}}

The '''Wikipedia deletion policy''' describes how material which does not meet the relevant content criteria is identified and removed from Wikipedia.
In the normal operations of Wikipedia, several hundred articles are [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion|deleted]] each day. While it is possible for any user to blank a page, the original content will still be available in the page history for others to view and put back if they wish. When pages are deleted, this removes not only the current version but also all previous versions.

All text created in the Wikipedia main [[Wikipedia:Namespace|namespace]] is subject to several important rules covering criteria for articles ([[WP:NOT|what Wikipedia is not]]), encyclopedic quality ([[WP:V|verifiability]] and [[WP:OR|original research]]), editorial approach ([[WP:NPOV|neutral point of view]]), as well as the Wikipedia [[Wikipedia:Copyrights|copyright policy]]. Articles and text which are capable of meeting these should usually be remedied by editing, but content which fails inclusion criteria for Wikipedia, is incapable of verification with reputable sources, or is in breach of copyright policy, is usually deleted.
Only [[Wikipedia:Administrators|administrators]] have the ability to delete and undelete pages within the system. With our current deletion system administrators necessarily must use their best judgment in making this decision. You can expect administrators to follow the '''process''' detailed below to aid them in their judgment.

Deletion of a Wikipedia article removes the current version and [[Wikipedia:page history|all previous versions]] from view. Unlike [[WP:VANDAL#Types of vandalism|page blanking]], which can be performed (or reverted) by any user, deletion can be performed only by [[Wikipedia:Administrators|administrators]]. In the normal operations of Wikipedia, over one thousand articles are [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion|deleted]] each day, in accordance with a deletion process that is open to all users.
Deleted pages can be restored, by administrators, if and only if there is support on [[Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion]], or the page was speedily deleted out-of-process. If deletions are made too casually, it is easy to lose track. Hence, the decision to permanently delete an article is not taken lightly, and the deletion process is followed. See [[Wikipedia:Undeletion policy]] for the guidance on undeletion.

This page describes how articles which are believed to be suitable for deletion should be handled, explains the various deletion options and processes, and summarizes a number of common problems with Wikipedia articles that may call for deletion as well as alternatives to deletion.
If an article is repeatedly re-created by unassociated editors after being deleted, this should be seen as evidence for the need for an article. Administrators should always be responsible with the power that they have. If in doubt... don't delete!

:* ''For deletion due to copyright issues, when and how this should be done, and alternatives, see: [[Wikipedia:Copyright problems]].''
== Procedure for deletion ==
If a page does ''not'' fall into one of the categories listed under [[Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion]], then you cannot delete it without it spending five days on [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion]] (or the analogous pages for [[Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion|images and media files]], [[Wikipedia:Categories for deletion|categories]], [[Wikipedia:Templates for deletion|templates]], [[Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion|redirects]]) first. Also check [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Precedents]] to see if there has already been consensus on whether the type of page you are considering marking for deletion should stay or go.

== Background==
<!-- before correcting grammar, note that "Anyone is welcome" is correct whereas "Anyone are welcome" is not, if there is an exception stated mid-sentence the subject-verb pairing does not change. -->
Anyone except a blocked user is welcome to participate in nominating articles for deletion or discussion of existing nominations. Participants in the deletion process should read (and be familiar with) the core Wikipedia policies of [[WP:V|Verifiability]], [[WP:NOR|No Original Research]] and [[WP:NPOV|Neutral Point of View]] first, since deletion is based upon policy and not personal likes and dislikes.

They should also bear in mind [[WP:NOT|what Wikipedia is not]], and not abuse the deletion processes.

Finally, it's worth noting that (as with all Wikipedia [[Wikipedia:Consensus|consensus]] decisions), the purpose of a discussion is to bring out a "sense of the community" and the valid points for or against each view. So deletion is not a strict "count of votes", but rather a judgement based upon experience and taking into account the policy-related points made by those contributing.

Other types of deletion have their own similar processes, described on pages such as:
{{col-begin}}
{{col-2}}
* [[Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion|images and media files for deletion]]
* [[Wikipedia:Categories for discussion|categories for discussion]]
* [[Wikipedia:Templates for deletion|templates for deletion]]
{{col-2}}
* [[Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion|redirects for deletion]]
* [[Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion|miscellany for deletion]]
* [[Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion|stub types for deletion]]
{{col-end}}
Collectively, these processes, together with [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion|Articles for deletion]], are
sometimes referred to as the XfD processes.

===Deletion lag times===
Each deletion category has a slightly different procedure. After an appropriate lag time, an administrator will delete the page if a [[Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators#Rough_consensus|rough consensus for deletion]] is reached, with the actual deletion procedure as described in [[Wikipedia:Deletion process]].

The current lag times are:
* [[Wikipedia:Copyright problems]] - about a week (in practice, more like two)
* [[Wikipedia:Categories for discussion]] - about a week
* [[Wikipedia:Images for deletion]] - about a week
* [[Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion]] - about a week
* [[Wikipedia:Templates for deletion]] - seven days
* [[Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion]] - seven days
* [[Wikipedia:Speedy deletions]] - no lag
* [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion]] - five days
* [[Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion]] - five days
* [[Wikipedia:Proposed deletion]] - five days

==Nominating an article for deletion ==
See also: [[Wikipedia:Template messages#Deletion]]
See the instructions at [[WP:SPEEDY|speedy deletions]], [[WP:PROD|proposed deletions]], or [[WP:AFD|articles for deletion]] accordingly. Following the procedures properly will place a warning at the top of the article to notify readers that the article is being considered for deletion. If no such notice is added please add one yourself as appropriate.

Please note warning notices may vary for [[Wikipedia:Copyright problems|copyright problems]], and they may not be required for pages that have no content (blank pages or [[Wikipedia:Redirect|redirects]]) ''and'' have no significant history ("significant history" includes any history of content being added or removed, excepting [[Wikipedia:candidates for speedy deletion|candidate for speedy deletion]]).
Each deletion category has a slightly different procedure. See the page for that category for details. '''Give the reason why you think it should be deleted'''. It will remain there for a time, giving other users the chance to comment on whether they think deletion is in fact appropriate. After an appropriate lag time, an administrator will delete the page if a rough consensus is reached - see [[Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators#Rough_consensus]].

See also: [[Wikipedia:Boilerplate_text#Listed_for_deletion]] and [[Wikipedia:Example deletion discussion]].
For [[wikipedia:candidates for speedy deletion|candidates for speedy deletion]], [[wikipedia:Administrators|Administrators]] do not have to request deletion - they may delete them on sight, though some choose to use [[Wikipedia:Speedy deletions]] in some cases.

===Renominations and recurring candidates===
=== "Listed for deletion" notice ===
Think carefully. Renomination costs additional volunteer time and server resources, on top of the original nomination.
When you list a page on [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion]], it is courteous to let people know it might be deleted. The suggested way is to place <nowiki>{{subst:vfd}}</nowiki> (''not'' <nowiki>{{vfd}}</nowiki>) '''above''' the page's content, which expands to:

Repeated re-creation of an article by previously unassociated editors may be evidence of a need for an article, but repeated nominations for deletion are not necessarily evidence that an article should be deleted, and in some cases, repeated attempts to have an article deleted may even be considered [[Wikipedia:Don't disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point|disruptive]]. '''If in doubt, don't delete.'''
{{vfd}}
If an article has been on [[AfD]] before but users want to start another iteration of a deletion debate, they should consider using this template, <nowiki>{{subst:afdx|2nd}}</nowiki>. This creates a link to a new debate page and prevents the old one from being overwritten or re-used.

A process that resulted in article deletion or keeping, should generally be respected and the article not immediately re-nominated for deletion (if kept) or re-created (if deleted). The most common reason for a repeat nomination is that there was marked lack of discussion or lack of consensus in the original decision and the second vote is required to clarify opinion. Otherwise:
Hopefully, this notice will prevent readers and new users from becoming confused as to why a page was removed. ''Please note: [[Wikipedia:Copyright problems|copyright problems]] have a different suggested notice.'' ''See also: [[Wikipedia:Boilerplate_text#Listed_for_deletion]]''

:{| border="0" cellpadding="4"
The notice is not needed for pages which a) have no content (such as [[Wikipedia:Redirect|redirects]]), '''and''' b) also have no significant history. (E.g. a redirect whose entire history is that it used to redirect from "Foo" to "Foobar", and has been changed to redirect to "FooBar", because the target page was moved, does not have any significant history.) A history which shows '''any''' content being added or removed that is not a [[Wikipedia:candidates for speedy deletion|candidate for speedy deletion]] is significant history.
|-
| ''Repeated nomination for deletion'' || In general, although there is no strict policy or consensus for a specific time between nominations, articles that have survived a nomination for deletion should not be immediately renominated. Please ensure that nominations to delete an article which was previously voted "keep", are carefully considered, and are based upon policy and not opinion. Repeated attempts to have an article deleted for non-policy reasons may sometimes be considered abuse of process and/or [[Wikipedia:Don't disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point|disruptive]], and the article may be ''[[Wikipedia:Speedy keep|speedy kept]]''.
|-
| ''Repeated recreation of deleted article'' || If it is believed that a significantly better researched article would be verifiable and otherwise meet Wikipedia article criteria, then recreation for good cause and in [[WP:FAITH|good faith]] may well be reasonable. This underlines that research and good writing is part of creating good articles. Also repeated re-creation of an article by previously unassociated editors may at times be evidence of a need for an article. But recreation of articles which should clearly remain deleted may result in the page being [[Wikipedia:page protection|protected]] to prevent its recreation.
|}

Renomination of an article previously considered on [[AfD]] should include this template, <nowiki>{{subst:afdx|2nd}}</nowiki>, which will prevent overwriting of the previous discussion:
=== Lag times ===
:<!-- Please do not remove or change this AfD message until the issue is settled -->{{#if:{{{nosubst|}}}|<div style="display:none;">}} {{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Wikipedia| |{{error:not substituted|AFD}}<div style="display:none;">}}{{#if:{{{nosubst|}}}|</div></div>}}
Once a page is listed for deletion by listing on one of the different pages, the nomination is kept open for a period of time to allow for community comment. The different pages have different "lag times" (the length of time that the page should normally be listed before the article can be deleted). This gives other users the chance to comment on whether they think deletion is in fact appropriate. The lag times are discussed at [[Wikipedia talk:Votes for deletion/lag time]] and are currently set at:
<div class="boilerplate metadata" id="afd" style="margin: 0 5%; padding: 0 7px 7px 7px; background: #EDF1F1; border: 1px solid #999999; text-align: left; font-size:95%;">

===Transwikied articles===
=== Commenting on a listing for deletion ===
Please note that if the original discussion result was to "[[transwiki]]," the page becomes a candidate for speedy deletion once the transwiki is completed, and does not need to go through AfD again.
When someone has listed an article for deletion on one of the lists, anyone else may comment on the request. When expressing an opinion, please include ''your opinion'', ''your reasoning'', and sign with <tt><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></tt> (four consecutive tilde characters). The following are some suggested wordings, you may also want to become familiar with [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion phrases|more VfD jargon]].
* delete
* keep
* comment (not a vote)
* other (some other action) such as
** redirect to <nowiki>[[article]]</nowiki>
** merge into <nowiki>[[article]]</nowiki> and redirect
** move to [http://www.wiktionary.org/ Wiktionary] / [http://meta.wikipedia.org/ Meta] / other GFDL site

===Abuse of deletion process===
Note that merge into <nowiki>[[article]]</nowiki> and delete is only a valid option if the information on authorship of the content is somehow preserved, or for public domain text.
The deletion processes all focus on whether an article meets the criteria for existence on Wikipedia; that is, they are to determine whether it is not original research, its central information is verifiable, and it is capable of achieving a neutral point of view with good editorship. XfD (deletion) processes are ''not'' a way to complain or remove material that is personally disliked, whose perspective is against ones beliefs, or which is not yet presented neutrally. Using XfD as a "protest strategy" in an editorial or NPOV debate is generally an abuse of process and the article will usually be ''[[WP:SK|speedy kept]]''.

It should also be noted that packing the discussion with [[Internet sockpuppet|sockpuppets]] (multiple accounts) and [[WP:SOCK|meatpuppets]] (advertising or soliciting of desired views) does not reflect a genuine consensus, and usually doesn't raise much in the way of novel policy considerations. A deletion debate is not a popular vote, but a way of obtaining editors' views as to whether an article meets policy guidelines or not, so these kind of activities don't achieve much. Often, where sock-puppetry is suspected, only editors with a significant history of contributions to Wikipedia will be counted in the rough consensus.
=== Decision Policy ===
To request that a page (or image) be permanently deleted, the request made on VfD, and any votes or comments relating to a listed page must be made in good faith. At the end of five days, if a [[Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators#Rough_consensus|rough consensus]] ('''what a rough consensus is is not set in stone''', some do consider a 2/3 majority a "rough consensus", while others believe consensus implies a higher ratio) has been reached to delete the page, the page will be removed. Otherwise the page remains.
The page will also remain if it has been improved enough since the initial listing that the reason for the listing no longer applies. This requires a reason to be given initially when requesting that a page be deleted.

== Deletion discussions, closure, reviewing==
Please do not remove ''any'' votes from any VfD or like discussion. If you suspect a vote of being a sockpuppet or otherwise invalid, mark it as such with a comment, and any pertinent links, and leave it there. The admin who reviews the discussion will investigate and decide whether or not to take that vote into account. By not removing any votes, we ensure that there can be no arguments over who removed what and why.

===Commenting on a listing for deletion ===
[[Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators]] expands on this and provides a little rationale.
Please see the appropriate instructions at [[WP:SPEEDY|speedy deletions]], [[WP:PROD|proposed deletions]], or [[WP:AFD|articles for deletion]] accordingly. In general, when someone has listed an article for deletion, anyone else may comment on the request. Please include ''your opinion'' and ''your reasoning'' and [[WP:SIGN|sign]] with <tt><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></tt>. Typical comments include
"delete," "keep," "comment:", "redirect to <nowiki>[[article]]</nowiki>," "merge into <nowiki>[[article]]</nowiki> and redirect," "move to [http://www.wiktionary.org/ Wiktionary] / [http://meta.wikipedia.org/ Meta] / other GFDL site", "keep and relist in 4 weeks" ''et al.''

Commonly used shorthands can be found at the [[Wikipedia:Guide to deletion]]. Note that "merge into <nowiki>[[article]]</nowiki> and delete" cannot be performed simply by copying and pasting text from the original article into the target unless the information on authorship of the content is somehow preserved, or the text is public domain. Otherwise, only the ''facts'' may be merged by ''completely rewriting'' the relevant text, so that none of the original copyrightable expression is used.
=== Unlisting a page from VfD ===
If another solution has been found for some of these pages than deletion, leave them listed on [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion]] for a short while, so the original poster can see why it wasn't deleted, and what did happen to it. This will prevent reposting of the same item. After the original poster has seen the explanation, or in any case after about a day, the page can be delisted from VfD.

Normally you should not remove ''any'' statements from any deletion discussion. If you suspect a user of adding multiple comments using [[Wikipedia:Sock puppet|sockpuppets]], feel free to comment and provide pertinent links. The admin who reviews the discussion will investigate and decide whether or not to take that opinion into account.
(Proposed) Any page that has been listed on VfD for 24 hours that has not received a single delete vote beyond that of the original lister can be removed from VfD after twenty-four hours. The discussion for these debates should be kept, but it does not need to be archived.

This restriction does not apply to [[WP:NPA|personal attacks]] and derogatory comments about living people:[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Pagana&diff=74713507&oldid=74532842]
:''Editors should remove any negative material about living persons that is either unsourced, relies upon sources that do not meet standards specified in [[Wikipedia:Reliable sources]], or is a conjectural interpretation of a source.'' [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons&action=edit&section=3]

=== Decision policy ===
At the end of the discussion, if a [[Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators#Rough_consensus|rough consensus]] for deletion has been reached, the page will be removed per [[Wikipedia:Deletion process]]; otherwise the page remains.

[[Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators]] expands on this and provides a little rationale.

===Early closure===
=== When the Lag Time runs out ===
If a clear consensus for non-deletion is quickly reached, discussion may be closed before the end of the typical period, for example, a clear consensus for speedy deletion, a clear consensus for a speedy keep, or a consensus for a redirect. The debate should remain [[transclude]]d on the appropriate deletion page. If the proposed solution has not achieved a very clear consensus, the listing should remain for the full five-day period. Any substantial debate, regardless of how lopsided the keep/delete count may be, implies that an early closing would be a bad idea.
At the end of the five days, the VfD discussions may be moved off the main VfD page onto a "holding page" called [[Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Old|Votes for deletion/Old]] where they will stay until an admistrator has time to act on the consensus decision. When carrying out those duties, please follow the process at [[Wikipedia:Deletion process]] which describes where and how the discussion should be archived. While the page itself may be deleted, the discussion about the deletion should be preserved.

=== Deletion review and undeletion ===
Always give a good [[edit summary]] when editing the VfD page, especially when unlisting an article, so that the page history of the VfD page can be used as backup archive for discussions that have not been properly archived.
{{main|Wikipedia:Undeletion policy}}

[[Wikipedia:Deletion review]] discussions can lead to [[Wikipedia:Undeletion policy|Undeletion]], a task performed by Administrators if there is support or if a page has obviously been deleted out of process. Undeletion of pages is limited to those pages that are kept in the archive. Some older deleted pages are completely inaccessible.
