The paragraph directly preceding this picture in the book describes the traveler's journey to the hamlet of Mesquititlan whereupon he came across a "friendly, and rather a pretty, woman" who was "owner of one of the huts". This picture depicts someone who the book author judged to be a zambo i.e. someone of mixed Native American and black African ancestry. (The term "zamba" is the feminine form of the term "zambo".)
